A Calming Meditation Technique Using Sound and Silence
A Calming Meditation Technique
I was glad to share several meditations on silence for the new Rituals book ‘The Art Of Soulful Living’ Silent moments offer an opportunity for self-reflection. When we quieten down we’re able to listen to ourselves properly and a new kind of awareness dawns.
It’s a beautiful book, full of tips and ideas and also features some fantastic poetry. You can try one of my silence inspired meditations taken from the Rituals book below
A Calming Meditation Technique
This reflective meditation uses contrast, and it’s an excellent one for anyone with a busy mind.
Try doing this before bed if you normally have difficulty sleeping:
- Sit or lay down somewhere comfortable, and take your five or 10 easy breaths.
- On your exhale, allow yourself to hum, like the sound a bumblebee makes. (Side note: Experts have linked humming to several health benefits— stress, mood, body detox, gut health and immune function)
- Listen to the sound as you make it, and when your exhale stops, stop humming, and hear the silence that comes after it.
- Remain silent while you take your breath in. Then breathe out and hum, and breathe in with silence.
- Do this maybe five times. When you’re finished just sit for a further moment, and listen again to the silence.
- It’s the contrast between the sound of your hum and the silence that comes after it. The sound you make almost brings the silence into sharper focus.
And so how about you, do you like silence in meditation or think it’s better with a little sound and activity?
