6 Abundance Foods From Around The World To Eat For Good Luck This New Year
Cultures around the world share in traditional New Years food rituals and recipes, each said to call in a year of prosperity and good luck. I love these traditions, because just like other mindful eating practices they bring a sense of charm and meaning to mealtimes. Here are six traditions to be inspired by this year, the lentil ‘gold coin’ dish is my favorite!
Sweden: Rice pudding is served on new years eve and it’s a traditional to hide an almond in one of the bowls – good luck will come to whoever finds it.
Mexico: In Oaxaca locals see in the new year with sweet crispy fritters called bunuelos. And once you’ve eaten them, it’s traditional to break the dish your bunuelos are served in as a way of breaking with the past and helping your new year wishes come true!
Poland: Dining on pickled herring is thought to bring a year of good luck.
Italy: Lentils are often eaten at new year and are sign of good fortune to come. The small round lentils looking like little gold coins. Here’s a lovely Stewed Lentil dish to try over the festive period.
Turkey: In Turkey the ritual is to break a pomegranate onto the doorway of your home for prosperity and abundance; the more seeds that pop out the better!
Iran: Koku Sabzi is an omelette like dish prepared using eggs and fresh herbs. New year is celebrated on the Spring Equinox in Iran and these ingredients are symbols of new growth and bountifulness.
