What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?
I was chatting to my brother earlier this week about our favourite quotes. This is one of mine from French fashion designer Sonia Rykiel.
For many of us growing up involves a process of socialisation that gradually quietens the natural and spontaneous expression of the creative impulse. Yet we are all born with the capacity to enjoy our creative expression. As we become more experienced at life we learn to colour within the lines socially, creatively and intellectually. We learn how life works and perhaps then we don’t as often question things further or think in alternative ways.
I’ll never forget sitting on the grass one sunny evening, listening to a children’s storyteller at a festival a few summers back. In the middle of an interactive story the group leader called out to the audience (mostly made up of kids and a few adults)
‘……and then little jimmy opened his packed lunch box and inside was a banana!….And what colour was the banana?’ He asked with excitement. ‘Silver’ shouted one kid. ‘orange’ shouted another.
As for me, I’d simply assumed the answer was yellow, knowing from experience that’s what colour bananas tend to be. I’d not considered the possibility that story time bananas didn’t have to be yellow. What I knew, my years of experience had stopped me considering other possibilities.
Sometimes I wonder if we adults know a bit too much for our own good. What would happen if we knew a bit less? If we didn’t have all the answers and enjoyed life for the mystery it is?
I’d love to know what you think about this. Do leave me a comment below.
Wishing you well for the week ahead.
