Mindful Movement + Meditation at Harvey Nichols in London

Our session began with a little meditation – my favorite! Quiet moments like these give us room to turn inwards and just to be for ourselves. Time to think, or not think.

Silent time helps us listen more and become receptive. In silence we can get a sense of something new, a new awareness, something we don’t need to articulate. A sense of our own being which is always there but often overlooked in the busyness of everyday life.

On a physical level, psychological stress can build up in our bodies leaving our muscles stiff and tense. Days spent looking at screens and thinking about things can make us feel a little disconnected from our bodies and and so coupling our mediation with a few gentle yoga stretches and mindful movements was a fab way to help us not only feel more supple and relaxed but to feel quite grounded too.

If you enjoy meditation, or want to improve your mindfulness practice, you might find adding a short amount of a light stretching to the start of your meditation can help you settle in better.

And stretching isn’t just for class time. If I feel creatively blocked or overwhelmed during the day, something that helps me is to do a few gentle yoga stretches here or there to refresh my perspective. Never underestimate the power of a strategically thrown tree pose in the middle of a stressful week!

Here are some of the simple seated yoga stretches I like to do when I sit down to meditate in the morning. Bringing the body into your meditation at the start can be a really nice way to not only relax and and let a little tension out, but it can make it easier to to meditate too.

Save it for later and give it a try.
