Review Compton Verney Art Gallery Warwickshire
Exploring the beauty and inspiration of Compton Verney, the 18th-century country mansion located in Warwickshire, England.
It is now home to an award-winning art gallery and a diverse permanent collection. The gallery is situated in 120 acres of stunning parkland, landscaped by renowned designer Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.
Compton Verney Art Gallery features a unique collection of artworks, including:
- Neapolitan art / Golden Age of Baroque
- Chinese bronzes (one of the top three collections in Europe)
- British portraits and Northern European sculpture
- The largest collection of British Folk Art in Britain
- A bequest of objects from textile designer Enid Marx and historian Margaret Lambert
This lovely gallery is currently hosting The Reflected Self exhibition – a beautiful collection of portrait miniatures.
Before you could have a photo in a locket, it was fashionable to have your lover painted in a miniature portrait which you could wear to keep them close!
My favourite part of Compton was the Chila Kumari Sing Burman exhibition. ‘A dazzling array of works including drawings, prints, collage, sculpture, neons and installation’
I loved the ice cream spoon painting and Chilas amazing neon ice cream van sculpture was my favourite art work of the day.
Her father owned an ice cream van and supported their family that way. This nostalgic and heart warming subject matter with the van was a recurring theme in her art.
You can read more about ‘The Smile You Send Returns To You (2024) in the note above.
As you move around the gallery there are lots of ways to participate in creativity yourself. Painting, sketching, reading, jigsaws, musical instruments, games and sculptures for both adults and kids.
I hope you can make it to Compton Verney for a visit one day soon, maybe take a friend who likes art and nature and make a day of it. Spectacular Diversions by Chila Kumari Sing Burman is on until Jan 2025.
